I work near the Nike store, and every once in a while I’ll see a line of young men - always young men - in chairs waiting 24 or 48 hours to buy a pair of shoes.

My first compulsion is to think “Your ancestors built civilizations from mud and rock, overthrew tyrannical kings, explored the farthest reaches of earth, and died storming the beaches of Normandy. And you are waiting days to buy some shoes you think are collectible.”

But then I think on it for a moment and realize 15 minutes before or after I see those guys, I’m probably looking up pictures of dogs on my computer or coming up with jokey comments on a website, so it’s not like I’m making great strides for humanity either.
